“Genesis” by Mari Calai – Photo Exhibition
September 21 @ 4:00 am – November 10 @ 7:00 pm
Glen Echo Photoworks invite you to the unveiling of Genesis, the solo exhibition of its Artist in Residence, Mari Calai. This exquisite collection of handmade photographic prints will be on display at Photoworks, located at 7300 MacArthur Blvd, Glen Echo, Maryland, from from September 21 to November 10.
The opening reception will take place on September 21 from 4 – 6pm and will include an artist talk and a short sound bath performance. The reception is organized with the support of Romanians of Washington, DC.
Genesis, the name Mari Calai chose as the tile of her exhibition, is the Greek word for “origin”, ”source”, or ”coming into being of something”. The Latin translation is orīgō, which is the origin of words like “aboriginal” and “origin”. Genesis combines her resonance with sacred geometry found in both the natural and constructed world, with symbols of her familiar roots represented by heirloom doilies made by her mother. This body of work weaves these into a cohesive whole with one of her believes ’as above so below’, the idea that what we are on the inside will be created in the word around us.
Mari Calai is a Romanian-American artist living in Northern-Virginia with her family. Born and raised in Romania, and for the later part of her life living abroad from Italy, to the US and S. Korea, Mari has been travelling the world exploring different cultures and that is what inspires her the most. As a mixed media artist, her work is sublime and market by a nostalgic realism. Mari’s works are held in private collections in Italy, Romania, Germany, Norway, South Korea, Japan, Australia and the U.S. Additional information is available at: www.maricalai.com.
